Discover the Quieter Trails of Eastern Nepal

Far from the busy routes of the Annapurna and Everest regions lies a quieter side of Nepal — a landscape of mountain ridges, Sherpa villages, ancient trails, forests, monasteries, and spectacular Himalayan views.

The Pikey Peak + Phaplu adventure combines mountain biking, gravel roads, technical trails, cultural experiences, and some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in eastern Nepal.

This is a journey for riders who want to explore beyond the usual tourist routes and experience Nepal at a slower, more personal pace.

The Journey

Our adventure begins in Kathmandu before heading east toward Phaplu, the gateway to the Solukhumbu region.

From Phaplu, we explore the Ratnange trails, using vehicle support where appropriate to maximize our time on some of the region’s best riding.

We then ride toward Junbesi, one of the most beautiful Sherpa settlements in the area, where we’ll visit its historic monastery before returning to Phaplu.

The adventure continues toward Chiwong Monastery, where we spend a night immersed in the mountain environment.

From there, we make our way toward Pikey Peak Base Camp before taking on Pikey Peak itself — one of eastern Nepal’s spectacular Himalayan viewpoints.

After returning to Phaplu, we finish with another day riding the Ratnange trails before heading back to Kathmandu.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrive in Kathmandu and settle into Nepal’s vibrant capital.

Meet the team, prepare your bike and equipment, and get ready for the adventure into eastern Nepal.

Day 2 — Kathmandu to Phaplu

Drive or fly from Kathmandu to Phaplu, depending on conditions and logistics.

Phaplu is the gateway to the Solukhumbu region and the starting point for our riding adventure.

Day 3 — Ratnange Trails — Vehicle Supported

Our first riding day takes us onto the Ratnange trails.

With vehicle support available, we can focus on riding the best sections of trail while keeping the day flexible for the group.

Expect a mixture of mountain terrain, technical sections, climbs, and rewarding descents.

Day 4 — Ratnange Trails

Another day dedicated to exploring the trails around Ratnange.

We’ll have the flexibility to choose routes based on trail conditions, weather, and the group’s riding ability.

This gives us the opportunity to experience more of the local trail network rather than simply passing through.

Day 5 — Phaplu to Junbesi & Monastery Visit

Today we ride toward Junbesi, one of the most beautiful and culturally significant Sherpa villages in the region.

We take time to explore the village and visit the local monastery before returning to Phaplu.

The combination of riding and cultural exploration makes this one of the special days of the trip.

Day 6 — Chiwong Monastery

We ride toward Chiwong Monastery, climbing into the mountains and leaving the busier roads behind.

We spend the night at the monastery, giving us a unique opportunity to experience the peaceful mountain environment and local Buddhist culture.

Day 7 — Toward Pikey Peak Base Camp

We drive part of the route before getting back on the bikes and riding toward Pikey Peak Base Camp.

The landscape becomes increasingly alpine as we gain elevation, with spectacular mountain views opening up around us.

We spend the night preparing for the following day’s summit adventure.

Day 8 — Pikey Peak & Return to Phaplu

Today is the high point of the journey.

We make our way toward Pikey Peak, reaching approximately 4,065 meters above sea level.

On a clear day, the summit provides incredible views across the Himalayan range.

After taking in the views, we descend and continue back toward Phaplu.

Day 9 — Ratnange Trails

One final day on the trails.

We return to the Ratnange trail network for another opportunity to ride some of the best terrain in the region.

It’s a chance to finish the riding portion of the adventure with plenty of smiles, dirt, and good memories.

Day 10 — Phaplu to Kathmandu

Drive or fly back to Kathmandu.

Enjoy a final evening in the city and celebrate the adventure through eastern Nepal.

Day 11 — Departure

Transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

Namaste and safe travels.
